Along with a motivated and dedicated team in Craigavon Area Hospital, I was the first surgeon to establish a day case hip replacement surgery service in Northern Ireland. By identifying and making a series of small changes and improvements to the processes involved in a hip replacement operation, we can allow patients to return to their own homes on the day of surgery. Same-day discharge has been shown to decrease the need for strong painkillers and can improve patient outcomes.
