About Me

Paul Magill

MB MCh FRCS (Tr&Orth)

I am a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon. The 'trauma' part of my position refers to emergency surgery to fix fractured bones. This happens exclusively in Craigavon Area Hospital where I am part of a team of eleven consultants covering the Southern Health Trust. The 'orthopaedic' part of my position refers to planned operations, and in my case, I focus primarily on hip replacements and knee replacements. I perform these operations at Craigavon Area Hospital, Ulster Independent Clinic and in Sports Surgery Clinic.

I am originally from Newry, Northern Ireland. I attended medical school in Trinity College Dublin and subsequently, through a competitive selection process I entered the Irish Trauma and Orthopaedics surgical training scheme. Upon graduating as a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons I embarked upon 2.5 years of subspecialty training in hip replacement and knee replacement. The first 18 months of this was in Belfast with Professor Beverland, a world-leader in his field, with whom I learned the skills of efficiency, fluency and objective measurement of outcomes. My final year was then spent in North Shore Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand where I worked in computer-navigated surgery and revision surgery. I returned to Northern Ireland in February 2018.

Along with a dedicated team in Craigavon area Hospital, I was the first surgeon to introduce a day-case hip replacement service to Northern Ireland.

I am a strong advocate of improving patient outcomes through audit and research. During my training I completed a Masters in Surgery (MCh) and I continue to publish in peer-reviewed journals, with 25+ publications to date. I have won awards for my research into hip and knee replacement surgery, most recently the prestigious McKee Prize at the British HipSociety conference in 2020. I am a trustee of the Trauma & Orthopaedics Research Charity (TORC).

I see patients for private clinic appointments in the Newry Clinic, Ulster Independent Clinic, and in Sports Surgery Clinic Dublin (SSC). You can make a booking here.
